THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE FIRST GRADE
Some parents have asked me what can they do over the summer to help make sure their child is ready for first grade. Here are a few suggestions to help make the transition easier and help keep the skills they have acquired sharp. Read with your child. Keep them interested in books and in the habit of reading. All grades are giving summer reading assignments this year. For incoming first graders we will keep it simple. The important thing is to read often. The details are in a separate package. Give them opportunities for writing. Have them write stories, captions and sentences for pictures they draw, notes, and even lists. Anything to keep in practice with writing skills and penmanship. In Math they should definitely be comfortable with numbers to at least 20 to start the year. Be able to count to and identify their numbers. This is where we start reviewing so if your child is comfortable with the material it gets them off to a good start and instills confidence. They have also been introduced to skills like simple addition and subtraction and basic time and money concepts so reinforce those concepts whenever possible. J I am including a list of sight words that students should know entering First Grade. They should be able to read them when they see them alone or in the context of a story. Make a set of index flash cards to practice or post them on the fridge. Just practice as needed. They are the key sight words that will make up our early stories. We begin adding more words and phonics sounds right away, so the better prepared your child is coming in the easier the transition.
